Kevin Slaney

I have been training in karate for over 24 years now, starting at the age of 8.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough, and still am to have been guided by my Sensei, Ronnie Ross, 6th Dan. Ronnie founded the Highland Karate Association and is still leading by example.

Most of my training has been at Sensei Ross’ dojo, Highland Shotokan, based in Inverness. I am also indebted to Sensei Phil Owen, 5th Dan, of Charleston Shotokan Karate Club, also in Inverness.

However, everyone in the HKA is lucky enough to train regularly with Sensei Dave Hazard from the Academy of Shotokan Karate

Highland Karate Association is linked to the ASK and the close relationship is reflected with Sensei Hazard being the Technical Director of the HKA. Our methods of training closely reflect that of the Academy, and this practice is continued at Fife Shotokan.

In addition to training under Senseis Hazard, Ross and Owen, I previously ran my own club in Inverness for five years, before moving to work in Edinburgh. I have also had the chance to teach on a number of occasions in Germany.

Competitive Career

I took an active part in competing for over thirteen years, and found some level of success in kata events.

I was regularly placed in the finals of the Scottish and British Championships, as well as winning several regional titles.

I was part of the winning team kata in the British Karate Federation Championships in 1992.

Personal Stuff

I am married to my wife Larissa (also a 1st Dan) and we have two sons, Benjamin aged 8 and Dominic, who is now 6.
